Why visit Aarhus
Aarhus rests on a contradiction worth facing before you budget. Its cost index sits at 139 %, placing it among the ten most expensive destinations in the comparator and clearly above Copenhagen, by roughly a third. Denmark's second city, 290,598 residents across 91 km², therefore costs more than its capital. The reason is bed supply: Copenhagen absorbs millions of room nights and crushes its own entry tier, while the October survey finds only 73 available properties in Aarhus across all tiers. Entry level here climbs to €84, close to three times the capital's level.
The counterweight is real, and it is young. Aarhus is a university city with one of the lowest median ages in Europe, and that shows on the bill rather than in the room rate. Restaurants price for perpetually cash-strapped students, cover charges are almost non-existent, and a drink costs less than in Copenhagen. Put plainly: the lodging line is Nordic, the going-out line is not.
On rooms, the survey gives €84 at entry, €91 mid-range and €129 upscale. The gap between the first two tiers is barely seven euros, so paying for entry level makes almost no sense here. The real break comes further down, in a dorm, at €23 a night at Roberta's Society Aarhus, rated 8.2 across 2,737 reviews.

Choosing a district
The October survey puts entry level at €84, mid-range at €91 and upscale at €129, across just 73 properties. One local quirk weighs heavily on the choice: Aarhus's budget hotels have no single rooms. A solo traveller therefore pays for a double, or switches to a dorm at €23 to €26 a night, or to a campsite, which stays the cheapest option in town. The geography is forgiving: the centre is compact and the light rail reaches the suburbs, so staying off-centre costs travel time rather than comfort.
Indre by - Latinerkvarteret
The medieval core, walled and gated until 1857, now largely pedestrianised. The Latin Quarter keeps its cobbled streets, low townhouses and niche boutiques; the cathedral, begun in the 12th century, is the oldest building in the city. Scandic The Mayor comes in at €93 a night and Scandic Aarhus City at €106, while the budget chains Cabinn and Wakeup hold the lower end of the centre around €59 and €60.
Vesterbro - Den Gamle By
North and west of the old core, a mostly residential quarter that nonetheless holds three anchors: the botanical gardens, the main university campus in yellow brick, and Den Gamle By, the 1909 open-air museum reconstructing some 75 traditional Danish houses. Neighbouring Øgade-kvarteret lines up low, colourful townhouses.
Viby - Skejby
The suburbs served by the light rail and the ring road, home to the chain hotels with the most predictable rates in the city: Four Points Flex by Sheraton Aarhus Viby at €80 a night (7.4 across 1,277 reviews) and its Skejby twin at €81 (7.8 across 982 reviews). Nothing picturesque, but a room below the upper band and a direct run into the centre.

This is the line that rescues an Aarhus budget, and it owes that to the students. Reckoned one of the best places to eat in Denmark, the city nonetheless prices low without the quality following the same slope: the good addresses are not at the most prominent ones, and a little scouting pays off. With roughly 15% of residents born abroad, Italian, Greek, Middle Eastern, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Japanese cooking is everywhere, and it is the most affordable range in town. The many lunch deals cost markedly less than the same kitchen à la carte in the evening. Below that again, the pølsevogn, the Danish sausage wagon, holds station in front of the central station and on City Hall Square. To self-cater, look for the discount signs: yellow Netto and blue Rema are the densest, with Coop 365 and Lidl filling in. Two rules to know: kitchens close at 9pm in most restaurants, and many places shut for several weeks in summer or in January and February. The gap between €146 and €249 per person per day is largely decided on this line.

Aarhus opened the Letbane in late 2017, Denmark's first light rail system, and its ticket is interchangeable with the yellow city buses in both directions. One trap catches the inattentive: tickets are not sold on board the light rail. They are bought by bank card at electronic stands installed at only some stops, so before boarding. Bicycles are accepted for a supplement, except on the inner-city stretch. The city is built for walking anyway, with an extensive pedestrian zone, and for cycling: the centre has cykelgader, streets where the cyclist takes the whole lane and cars are not meant to exceed cycling speed. The terrain surprises, since Denmark is flat but Aarhus holds some of the steepest roads in the country, nicknamed the Aarhusian Alps. To get there, the smart calculation runs from Copenhagen: the intercity coach takes about an hour longer than the express train, but fares run 40% (standard tickets) to 90% (saver deals) below the full rail price. One detail worth a day of city transit: a rail ticket bought from Copenhagen stays valid for the rest of the day on Aarhus buses, at no extra cost. - Denmark kept the Danish krone and did not adopt the euro, so every payment carries a conversion cost. Cash stays of little use, but two points matter: some businesses, restaurants especially, add a surcharge of a few percent on foreign cards because of banking fees; and light-rail tickets are sold by card only, at the stands on stops, never on board.
