Gothenburg: how much to budget

Gothenburg is the largest non-capital city in the Nordic countries, and it shows in the bill: 674,000 residents, two universities, more than 50,000 students, and a stay infrastructure sized for them. The city sits halfway between Oslo and Copenhagen, and that is exactly where its cost index lands: 0.83, essentially level with Copenhagen (0.81) but nearly 20% below Oslo (1.02). On a Scandinavian itinerary, this is the stop that pulls the average down.

Founded in 1621 by royal decree of Gustav II Adolf and laid out on the Dutch model, it kept its canals and a compact center you cross on foot. The real budget lever, though, is in the tram ticket: Västtrafik's zone A includes the southern archipelago, and the boats leaving from Saltholmen accept the ordinary transit pass. A 24-hour pass at 120 kronor, roughly €10, therefore buys access to car-free islands that elsewhere would be sold as a day excursion.

On lodging, the gap between tiers is sharp: a well-rated hostel starts at €25 a night, a mid-range hotel room steps up to €79, upscale to €108. The jump is steeper than in southern Europe, which makes the dorm bed unusually good value here.

For two people at mid-range comfort, plan roughly €150 to €200 a day excluding flights. The easiest line to compress is food, thanks to the set lunch served between 11:30am and 2pm.

The October survey puts a hostel night at €25, a mid-range hotel at €79 and upscale at €108. Since Gothenburg is split by the Göta älv and served by a dense tram network, staying off-center costs little time: the real question is whether you want quiet residential streets, the restaurant strip, or proximity to the bus terminal that links the airport.
