Median per night; the small figure is the number of properties surveyed. An area with fewer than 8 addresses in a tier shows no price: a median over five values shifts by a fifth if one moves.
The area costs you most at the top end
For hostels, the gap between the cheapest and priciest area is only 20%. For mid-range hotels it reaches 74%. Put differently: on a tight budget, pick the area for what is there, not for its price. From hotel level up, the address becomes a real lever.
The areas, one by one
Kuta€19 a night
The island's original beach resort, ten minutes from the airport, and the cheapest in the survey alongside Seminyak. A long beach, loud nightlife, tourist shops: dense and unsubtle, but also the best landing point for a first or last night. Traffic is the worst on Bali, and the beach is not the island's finest.
Seminyak€19 a night
North of Kuta, the same coast but another crowd: careful restaurants, designer shops, beach clubs. Surveyed prices are nonetheless identical to Kuta's at mid-range, which makes it the best value in the survey at that comfort level. You need a scooter or a car to leave it: the distances do not walk well.
Canggu€22 a night
The northern stretch of coast, rice fields, surf breaks and laptop cafés. It has become the district of long stays and remote work, with a lodging offer that follows. Slightly pricier than Seminyak, considerably more spread out: everything is done on two wheels, and the coastal-road traffic has become a local joke.
Ubud€26 a night
Inland, an hour and a half from the coast: terraced rice fields, temples, workshops, yoga. It is the only area in the survey without a beach, and its visitors come for something else. Prices run a third above the southern coast at mid-range. The centre is commercial and congested; the countryside starts ten minutes away by scooter.
Uluwatu / Pecatu€33 a night
The southern peninsula, cliffs, celebrated surf breaks and a temple on the edge. It is the priciest in the survey and the most spread out: properties are scattered over kilometres, with no centre and no street life. A car is essential. Pick it for the views and the waves, not for convenience.
Sanur
The east coast, calm, a seafront promenade and a sheltered lagoon that suits families. Our survey is too thin there at mid-range to publish a reliable median.
Only 7 properties surveyed in this area at mid-range comfort: too few to publish a median.
Nusa Dua
The southern resort enclave, large gated complexes and groomed beaches. Only two mid-range properties surveyed: the offer there is almost entirely upmarket.
Only 2 properties surveyed in this area at mid-range comfort: too few to publish a median.
