Porto drops steeply down to the Douro. Your area mostly decides what you will climb every evening: sleep by the river for the view, higher up to spare your legs.

Ribeira's coloured houses stack up above the quay, below the cathedral and the Dom Luís bridge. To sleep, prefer the lanes a little higher up, towards the Sé or Rua das Flores, pedestrian and quieter than the quay.

Across the river, Vila Nova de Gaia has its own hotels, with views of Porto and the port cellars on the doorstep. They are not in this page's table: it is a separate town, and every evening in Porto ends with a walk back over the bridge.

Practical, without the hills

Avenida dos Aliados, closed off by the city hall, and the Bolhão market, reopened after its renovation, form the centre of Porto. Pedestrian Rua Santa Catarina runs past the Majestic café, and São Bento station, at the foot of the avenue, is worth a detour for its azulejos.

It is the right choice if you travel with luggage or children: you walk down to Ribeira in ten minutes and ride the metro back up.

West of Aliados, Rua Miguel Bombarda lines up art galleries, record shops and designer boutiques, and pedestrian Rua de Cedofeita its everyday shops. The Clérigos tower and the Lello bookshop are ten minutes' walk away.

Expect around €79 a night mid-range. The district suits you if you come for the city more than the river.

Around the roundabout and Casa da Música lies modern Porto: wide avenues, newer buildings, chain hotels. The district suits you if you are here for a concert or for work, or if you prefer flat ground to the hills of the centre.

Avenida da Boavista runs straight to the sea at Foz, and the Serralves museum and park are a short bus ride away.

Tight budget or an early train

Bonfim and Campanhã

East of the centre, Bonfim is a residential district on the turn: workers' houses, murals, a few new cafés. Campanhã, the main station, is where trains to Lisbon leave from, and Douro Valley trains stop there.

Expect around €50 for a basic room. A good choice for a night before an early train, or for a long stay on a small budget.

  • Far from the old centre

From the airport

  • Metro, line E

    The purple line runs from the airport to Trindade, in the centre, in about half an hour. You need a rechargeable Andante card, sold at the machines before the platform.

  • Taxi or ride-hailing

    Twenty to thirty minutes to the centre depending on traffic. Simpler for Ribeira, where the metro does not reach the quay.

Good to know

  • Sleep high, walk downBetween the river and Aliados, you pay for the climb on every trip. With luggage or children, stay at the top.
  • HeatingIn winter, check there is some: old houses are poorly insulated and the damp gets in.
  • Cobbles in the rainFrom November to March it rains often and the cobbles turn slippery. Bring shoes with grip.
  • The tourist taxPer person per night, up to seven nights, and usually paid on site.

What is the best area for a first visit to Porto?

Should you stay in Porto or Vila Nova de Gaia?
Porto for a first trip: the sights, the restaurants and the metro are there. Gaia gives you the view of Porto and the port cellars, but every evening in town ends with a walk back over the Dom Luís bridge.

In Bonfim, at around €50 for a basic room. For a dorm bed, the hostels around Aliados, at about €20, are the best placed.
Is Porto hard going on foot?
Distances are short, but everything climbs. Stay at the top, in Aliados or Cedofeita, walk down to the river, and come back up by metro or the Guindais funicular.
