The areas, one by one
Termini€116 a night
The main station and its surroundings, by far the cheapest area in the survey: half the price of the historic centre at equal comfort. It is also the best connected point in Rome, with both metro lines, the buses and the airport shuttle. In exchange, the district itself has nothing Roman about it: it is a transit area, noisier and less welcoming at night. Pick it for the budget and the connections, not for the setting.
Prati / Vatican€175 a night
The residential district north of the Vatican, laid out on a grid and far quieter than the opposite bank. You eat better and cheaper than in the tourist centre, and the metro links the rest of the city. The Vatican basilica and museums are walkable. It is the sensible compromise: close to everything without the price or the crowds of the historic centre.
Monti€183 a night
Between the Colosseum and Termini, a district of sloping lanes with craft workshops, vintage shops and wine bars. It has kept a neighbourhood life the historic centre has lost, while staying ten minutes' walk from the Forum. Prices sit mid-range. It is the choice for anyone wanting character without paying Pantheon rates.
Spanish Steps€239 a night
The luxury triangle, between the Spanish Steps, via del Corso and via dei Condotti. Very central, very busy, and among the priciest in the survey. The district lives off upmarket retail and empties once evening comes. Book it if walking to the major sights matters more than the budget.
Centro Storico / Navona€253 a night
The historic heart, between the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori. It is the priciest area in the survey, more than double Termini at equal comfort, and the only one where you step out of the hotel straight into the scenery. Little public transport, but everything is walkable. You pay for the location, and on a short stay it earns it.
Testaccio
The district of Roman cooking, with its covered market and unpretentious tables, off the tourist circuits. Too few properties surveyed to publish a median price.
