Porto carries its cooking in its nickname: locals are the tripeiros, the tripe eaters, ever since they gave up their meat to the fleet that sailed to take Ceuta in 1415 and lived on what was left. Tripas à moda do Porto is still the city's dish, served in neighbourhood tascas for about ten euros. The other local monument is the francesinha, a hot sandwich under melted cheese and drowned in beer sauce, around €10 to €15 and easily a full meal. The budget move here is called the prato do dia: on weekday lunchtimes a dish of the day with bread and a drink often runs €8 to €12 in the tascas of Cedofeita or Bonfim, far from the Ribeira terraces. Across a mid-range day, food is the biggest item after the bed, inside an envelope of €197 per person.

The biggest saving in Porto is not a fare, it is where the airport sits: Francisco Sá Carneiro is the terminus of metro line E, putting the centre about thirty minutes away for the price of a ticket plus one zone, with no fare to haggle over. In town the network runs on the rechargeable Andante card and a zone system: an urban ride stays under €2, and the historic centre is walkable anyway. One exception to watch: the heritage trams, including the Douro-side line, are sold as an attraction and cost several times the metro fare for the same distance. The Guindais funicular and the upper deck of the Luís I bridge solve the real local problem, which is the gradient, one for a ticket and the other for free. On a mid-range budget of €197 per person per day, transport stays one of the smallest items here.

Porto, also known in English as Oporto, is the second largest city in Portugal, after Lisbon. It is the capital of the Porto District and one of the Iberian Peninsula's major urban areas. Porto city proper, which is the entire municipality of Porto, is small compared to its metropolitan area, with an estimated population of 273,476 people in a municipal area of 41.42 km2 (16 sq mi). As of 2025, the Porto metropolitan area has around 1.9 million people in an area of 2,395 km2 (925 sq mi), making it the second-largest urban area in Portugal.
