Median per night; the small figure is the number of properties surveyed. An area with fewer than 8 addresses in a tier shows no price: a median over five values shifts by a fifth if one moves. The bars share one scale across all tiers.

Where the areas are

Each pin carries the median price of a mid-range hotel night. The paler ones are the cheapest.

The area costs you most at the top end

For hostels, the gap between the cheapest and priciest area is only 57%. For mid-range hotels it reaches 100%. Put differently: on a tight budget, pick the area for what is there, not for its price. From hotel level up, the address becomes a real lever.

And price is not the only gap: travellers rate Mouassine / Bab Doukkala 8.82 out of 10 where Guéliz / Hivernage gets 7.67. Here the cheapest area is also the lowest rated: what you save is not only distance from the centre.

The city built under the protectorate: wide avenues, pavements, legible traffic. It is the cheapest part of Marrakech for a three-star, more than twenty euros below the medina, and it is also by far the worst rated in the city, with a quarter of addresses above nine out of ten against close to two thirds in Mouassine. The area is really two things at once, unremarkable mid-range hotels and a few palaces that alone carry the highest upscale price in the city. The medina is a twenty minute walk or a short taxi ride away.

The northern medina, around the Ben Youssef medersa and the Marrakech museum, holds more lodging than anywhere else in the city, across all tiers. Prices stay close to those on the square for a clearly better rating, with ten points more addresses above nine out of ten. You are in the middle of the souks, which is both the argument and the caveat: trade fills the lanes all day, and they resemble one another enough that you will get lost the first few evenings.

The southern medina, between the Saadian tombs, the Bahia palace and the old Jewish quarter, is quieter than the north and better rated than the square. Prices sit in the middle of the range across all three tiers, never the lowest nor the highest. It is the closest area to the major monuments and the easiest to reach by car, the streets being less narrow. The souks and the nightlife, though, mean a real walk.

For

  • Quieter than the northern medina

The main square and the lanes around it hold the cheapest addresses in the city, with a clear gap in the first tier. Everything is walkable: the Koutoubia, the souks, the Bahia palace. It is also the lowest rated part of the medina, and the reason is noise: the square runs late and the riads facing it have only a courtyard between them and it. Suits a two or three night stay at the centre of everything, less so if you sleep lightly.

This is the best rated part of Marrakech, and not marginally: close to two thirds of its addresses score above nine out of ten, against a little over a third around the square. It is the quarter of restored guest riads, which explains both the rating and the price, the highest in the medina on the first two tiers. Jemaa el-Fna stays a fifteen minute walk away through markedly quieter lanes. The trade-off to know: few genuinely cheap addresses.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest area in Marrakech?
Guéliz / Hivernage, at €48 a night for a mid-range hotel, against €96 in Mouassine / Bab Doukkala. The gap holds at the same standard: these are two medians of the same tier, for the same arrival date.
Which area should you pick for a first visit to Marrakech?
Souks / Ben Youssef, 2.3 km from the centre: the closest of those that stay at or below the median, with 4 notable places within 1.5 km. A night there runs €77 at mid-range comfort. What matters on a first trip is walking distance: what you can reach on foot, you will see; the rest waits for a second stay.
Does the area really change the price?
It depends on your tier, and this is the part the guides leave out. For hostels the gap between the cheapest and priciest area is only 57%. For mid-range hotels it rises to 100%. The further up you go, the more the address costs you.
Do you have to book in the centre of Marrakech?
Not necessarily. Guéliz / Hivernage sits 0.2 km from the centre at €48 a night, while Mouassine / Bab Doukkala asks €96. The useful question is not distance to the centre but what you plan to do: each area above lists the notable places within 1.5 km.
How many areas are compared, and why not all of them?
5 areas, 5 of them with a published median. An area shows no price when the survey holds fewer than 8 addresses in that tier: over five values, one that moves shifts the result by a fifth. We would rather leave a blank than print a fragile figure.
Are the cheapest areas in Marrakech also the lowest rated?
Here, yes, and it is measurable: Guéliz / Hivernage, the cheapest area, is also the lowest rated at 7.67 out of 10, where Mouassine / Bab Doukkala gets 8.82. Paying less for an area is not only accepting to sit further from the centre. Each area above gives its score, the number of reviews behind it, and the share of addresses above 9.
Which area of Marrakech is the safest?
We do not measure it, and we would rather say so than rank areas on an impression. This survey covers prices, distances and counts of mapped places: none of that tells you how safe a street is. What the area notes above do say honestly, where it applies, is density, noise and night-time activity, which are observable facts rather than judgements. For safety itself, the authoritative source is your own foreign ministry's travel advice.
What does a week cost by area in Marrakech?
Seven nights at mid-range comfort come to €336 in Guéliz / Hivernage and €672 in Mouassine / Bab Doukkala, a €336 gap on the choice of area alone, at equal standard. That is often more than shifting your dates would save on the whole trip.
Where do these prices come from?
From a survey for an arrival on 15 October 2026, covering 174 Marrakech properties at mid-range comfort, 155 of which sit inside one of the areas above. Each price is its area's median, not a weighted average or an estimate.
