Food is the second line of the trip, behind lodging and ahead of local transport. Over seven nights at mid comfort it takes a little under a third of what you spend on the ground, where lodging takes close to half.
Three regimes separate clearly in our ranges. Eating at counters, in the Mission's taquerias, Chinatown's shops and the covered markets, keeps the day at a level comparable to a large European city. Alternating a quick meal and a sit-down dinner doubles it. Dining out every evening doubles it again: it is dinner, and dinner alone, that makes this city's food budget drift.
Two local habits weigh on the bill and catch European visitors out. The posted price does not include sales tax, which is added at the till. And the tip on table service sits well above European practice, to the point where it belongs in the budget as a line rather than as a gesture. Together they add a meaningful share to every restaurant bill, and nothing at all to a meal taken at a counter.
The practical consequence is simple: the lever is not eating cheaper, it is sitting down less often. Lunch at a counter and dinner at a table costs less than two seated meals, and the Mission lets you do both without going far.
What getting around costs in San Francisco

This is the smallest of the six lines, by a wide margin. Over seven nights at mid comfort, local transport comes to about an eighth of what lodging costs. The reason is geographic: the city fits inside a square eleven kilometres on a side, and most sightseeing happens on foot.
The municipal network covers buses, streetcars and the two cable car lines. A single ticket is modest against the rest of the trip, and a day pass pays for itself from the third ride, which comes quickly once you ride up the hills rather than walk them. The cable car is priced separately and well above the bus: it is an attraction sold as transport, and it belongs in the sightseeing budget rather than the travel one.
The regional train links the airport to downtown in around thirty minutes for a sum that bears no comparison with the taxi fare. Over a return trip the difference alone covers several days of city transport.
The car is the one line where San Francisco genuinely catches people out. Downtown parking is charged by the hour at levels that exceed a full day of public transport, and the gradients make driving uncomfortable. It is only worth it for leaving the city, and is then rented for those days rather than for the whole stay.
