Jakarta is one of the cheapest destinations in this comparator once you are on the ground, neck and neck with Bali in the same country. In Jakarta the city is too spread out and too congested for distance to the center to be measured in kilometers: it is measured in travel time. Sleeping near an MRT or commuter-train station matters more than the neighborhood itself. Worth knowing, Jakarta is above all a business destination: rates often drop on weekends, when the city empties out.
Jalan Jaksa - Gambir
The historic backpacker street, steps from Gambir station and the Monas. Losmen and small hotels here are among the cheapest in the city.
Cikini - Menteng
Leafy colonial district, quiet and central, close to the museums and cafés. The best comfort-price compromise, with decent three-stars.

Eating in Jakarta costs very little if you eat local. Betawi cuisine, native to the city, comes in cheap dishes: nasi uduk, coconut-milk rice served with fried chicken and sambal, kerak telor, a glutinous-rice omelette with dried shrimp, soto Betawi, a coconut-milk broth, or gado-gado vegetables in peanut sauce. Street stalls, the kaki lima, serve most of it for the equivalent of a few euros, and shopping malls all hold air-conditioned food courts, handy when the heat bears down. The Gojek and Grab apps deliver to your door for a trifle. A sit-down dinner at a neighborhood restaurant stays well under €10. One trap to know: hotels usually add 21% tax and service to the bill.

Jakarta is congested for much of the day, and that is the point to plan for. The good news, the network (MRT, Transjakarta buses, KRL commuter trains) runs on integrated ticketing: one prepaid card is enough, and fares range from 2,000 to 20,000 rupiah depending on mode and distance. The MRT even accepts contactless Visa and Mastercard directly. From Soekarno-Hatta airport, the commuter train reaches the center for 70,000 rupiah, while a taxi can exceed 300,000 rupiah at rush hour: the gap is huge. Avoid driving late in the day. For short hops, motorbike ride-hailing apps stay the fastest and cheapest option.
