Why visit Cairo
Cairo holds a record in this comparator: the cheapest mid-range room of every destination tracked, recorded at €19 a night. Alexandria, 178 kilometres to the northwest and in the same country, posts €40 for the same tier, twice as much. A hostel bed drops to €5, and the cost-of-living index sits at 0.36: only one destination in the comparator goes lower.
The city has two foundations. Fustat, "the city of tents", was born in 641 when the Arab armies settled south of today's sprawl; Al-Qahira, "the Victorious", was founded on 11 July 969 by the Fatimids a few kilometres north, and it is that name that became Cairo in European languages. Cairenes themselves still say Masr, which also means Egypt as a whole. Today 9.8 million people fit into 528 km², more than 21 million across the metropolitan area.
Coptic Cairo has the densest cluster of sites in the pack: the Hanging Church, St George's, Saints Sergius and Bacchus, St Barbara and St Menas, plus the Coptic Museum, all sit within a radius of roughly two hundred metres. The Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, at Fustat, split the rest of the collections.
For two people at mid-range comfort, plan roughly €45 to €70 a day excluding flights. You pay in Egyptian pounds, and much of daily commerce is settled in cash.

Choosing a district
Cairo's supply is oddly shaped: in the October probe, 2,059 properties came out at the upper tier, 1,490 at the budget end, and only 610 in the middle. The gap is in the middle, not at the bottom. Another quirk: in Giza, the view is the product. Most addresses recorded between €7 and €55 carry "Pyramids View" in their name, and price tracks the sightline more than the amenities. So the real choice is between sleeping facing the plateau, some thirty minutes from the museums, or sleeping on a central metro station.
Downtown - Midan Tahrir
Tahrir Square, the Egyptian Museum five minutes away on foot and Sadat station, one of the metro's three big interchanges. This is where the cheapest hotels in the probe sit, including one at €2 a night rated by over 450 travelers, and the best koshary counters.
Gizeh - Al-Haram
The foot of the plateau, where several properties look straight onto the site entrance. This is the densest zone for rooms with a view: a well-rated guesthouse at €7, a five-star at €16, a smart hotel at €55. The metro does not climb to the plateau, so you finish by bus or taxi from Giza station.
Gezira - Zamalek
The island in the Nile, green and quiet, home to the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art. It is the district the city reserves for good restaurants, with prices to match, but also the one central spot where you escape the permanent roar of the avenues.
Vieux Caire - Fustat
The historic south, served by metro line 1. Six Coptic sanctuaries and the Coptic Museum fit within two hundred metres, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization is a kilometre away, and the Fustat archaeological site marks where the first city stood.

Koshary is the dish that defines Cairo's food budget: macaroni, rice, lentils, chickpeas and tomato sauce in one bowl, served everywhere downtown, notably at the Koshari Tahrir counters. Along with foul, taameya and fetir, it keeps a street meal at a few dozen cents, a fraction of a €5 hostel night. The Gad chain, spread across the city, holds the same price level for hot sandwiches. One local rule is worth knowing: restaurants listed in guidebooks tend to produce an English menu at sharply inflated prices, so being recommended costs more than being stumbled upon. The real move is to aim for busy places and never an empty room. Downtown concentrates good cheap cooking, Zamalek and Mohandiseen the upper end, where a minimum charge is often added. Cafés serve tea, coffee or shisha interchangeably, and nothing obliges you to order a meal.

Cairo runs Africa's first and largest metro, and the fare depends not on distance but on how many stations you cross: 8 Egyptian pounds up to 9 stations, 10 for 10 to 16, 15 for 17 to 22, 20 beyond 23. Even the priciest ticket stays comfortably under 50 euro cents, about one hundredth of a €19 mid-range night. The three lines meet at Shohadaa under Ramses Square, at Sadat under Tahrir and at Attaba, which covers the centre, Dokki, Maadi and, via line 3, Heliopolis. The network is crowded and pickpocket awareness is required, but it is the only way to sidestep the traffic. Two limits to know: line 3 still does not reach the airport, and the Giza plateau is not served, so you get off at Giza station and take a bus or taxi to Al-Haram. Trains link the city to Alexandria with about thirty daily departures, but foreigners are billed in dollars, which makes it the priciest line item of an otherwise very cheap trip.
