Why visit Brno

Brno is the historic capital of Moravia and the Czech Republic's second city, with 402,739 inhabitants. It holds the country's third-largest heritage protection zone, behind Prague and Olomouc, and a density of architecture rare for its size: Adolf Loos, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Fellner and Helmer, Dušan Jurkovič all built here. Špilberk Castle, once the seat of Moravia's rulers and later a prison, looks down on the centre. Above all, Brno sits off the tourist circuit: you visit without queues and without the inflated pricing of Prague.

The detail that changes the budget maths is a quirk of the local hotel market. Entry-level nights come in at €51, mid-range at €63: the gap between those two bands is among the tightest we track. Trading up in a hotel costs almost nothing here, but the genuinely cheap hotel barely exists. The real saving is in hostels: Hostel John Galt is measured at €21 a night, Schrott Bed&Beer at €23, 10-Z Bunker at €25, all rated around 8.3.

You pay in Czech koruna (Kč), which adds a step but offers a concrete lever: three banks charge no withdrawal fee at their city-centre ATMs, fio banka, Komerční banka and Raiffeisenbank. The tram, which locals call the šalina, takes contactless cards through the Beep&Go system, and a full day is capped at 90 Kč.

For one person at mid-range comfort, plan around €194 a day on the ground, or €1,358 for seven nights excluding flights. At the top end, Brno tops out below Prague, Vienna or Kraków.

Where to sleep in Brno

Choosing a district

Brno's historic core is compact and crossable on foot: the local guide notes that most sights are within walking distance of each other. Staying central buys comfort more than saved time, and the spread between neighbourhoods stays modest, the city's upmarket band being measured at €119. The real choice is between the buzz of the centre and the quiet of the northern districts.

50-120 €

Brno-střed (nám. Svobody, Zelný trh)

The historic heart, between Freedom Square and Zelný trh, the old cabbage market. Churches, theatres, fountains and pastry shops minutes apart, with Petrov hill and its cathedral overhead.

Best forFirst visit, short stays, car-free travellers.
21-45 €

Autour de la gare centrale

Short on charm, but it is the hub of everything: trains, trams and the interchange for all night buses. It is also where the city's cheapest hostels cluster.

Best forTight budgets, day trips to Vienna or Bratislava, late arrivals.
31-60 €

Veveří - Grohova

North-west of the centre around the Grohova tram stop, the university quarter. The guide lists most of the city's budget eating here, and the student bars on Dominikánská and Starobrněnská are ten minutes away.

Best forLonger stays, younger travellers, cheap eating.
60-120 €

Lužánky - Černá Pole

Around Lužánky park, north of the centre. Residential, green and markedly quieter, while staying a few šalina stops from Freedom Square.

Best forFamilies, slower trips, green-space lovers.

Eating in Brno

Concrete benchmarks to set your meal budget, from the morning coffee to dinner.

Czech cooking runs on pork, knedlíky (bread dumplings) and potatoes, with soup almost always opening lunch. The budget marker is simple and holds even in the centre: the local guide notes you can easily find a dish with a drink for around €7. Many of those places also run a midday set menu, more limited and pre-prepared, cheaper still. The universal fallback is smažený sýr, fried cheese, served in restaurants and at street counters alike. To drink, the local beer is Starobrno and the national soft drink is Kofola, both worth trying on draught; the Pegas brewery, a block west of the steeple of St James Church, brews in front of its guests. For something sweet, the cukrárna near the House of the Four Idiots on Freedom Square is the only place in the country serving the chocolate rakvička. At those prices, food on a mid-range trip stays well below the lodging line, measured at €63 a night.

Moving around Brno

Transit, distances and the smart moves so you don't pay the tourist tax.

The network is called IDS JMK and covers trams, buses, trolleybuses and local trains across the whole South Moravian Region. Two tickets cover the city: 20 Kč for 15 minutes with transfers, 25 Kč for 60 minutes. The centre being compact, the short ticket handles most useful journeys. Better still: with Beep&Go, every tram and bus carries a contactless terminal, you tap on and tap off, and the day's total is capped at 90 Kč, the price of the 24-hour ticket, with nothing bought in advance. Daytime service ends at 23:00, night buses take over every 30 to 60 minutes with a single interchange at the Main Train Station. Travellers aged 70 and over ride free on showing a passport. For day trips, Brno's position is its best asset: Vienna is 1½ hours by Railjet, €30 on the standard fare and €15 with the RegioJet operator, and Bratislava is 1½ hours for €7 to €9 with the same operator. Prague is 2½ hours: the full fare is 360 Kč, but SuperAkční tickets drop to 119 Kč and Včasná tickets to 205 Kč when bought ahead.

6 tips on the ground

  1. Paying for trams contactlessly through Beep&Go caps the day at 90 Kč, the price of the 24-hour ticket, with no need to pick a fare in advance.
  2. The historic centre is crossable on foot: the short 20 Kč ticket, valid 15 minutes with transfers, covers most useful journeys.
  3. Brno's hostels are measured at €21 to €25 a night, far below the entry-level hotel band set at €51: this is the trip's main lever.
  4. Withdrawing koruna at the fio banka, Komerční banka or Raiffeisenbank ATMs downtown avoids all withdrawal fees, which no other chain guarantees.
  5. A dish with a drink runs around €7 even in the centre, and the pre-prepared midday set menus go lower still.
  6. SuperAkční train tickets to Prague at 119 Kč, against a 360 Kč full fare, are capped in number and sold only in advance: booking as soon as dates are fixed cuts the bill by three.

FAQ

FAQ - Brno

How much does a week in Brno cost?
For seven nights, plan roughly €728 per person on a budget (hostel, €7 dish of the day, transport capped at 90 Kč), and around €1,358 at mid-range comfort with a mid-tier hotel, excluding flights. The gap is almost entirely lodging: the nightly rate moves from €51 to €63 between the two.
What is the best month to visit Brno?
September, without hesitation. The 1991-2020 normals give a 19.5°C high, the same warmth as May, but with 9.5 rainy days against 12.6. July is the warmest month (25°C high) and also the wettest of the year, at 82.9 mm. The Moravian winter is blunt: January averages -1°C with lows near -3.7°C, which explains the softer lodging rates.
Is Brno a cheap destination?
It depends entirely on how you sleep. At the top end, Brno tops out at €119 and stays under Prague, Vienna and Kraków. But its entry-level hotel band, measured at €51, is expensive for Central Europe: neighbouring capitals go far lower at the bottom. The city rewards travellers who use hostels and guesthouses, and those after mid-range comfort, much less those hunting a cheap hotel.
How much does public transport cost in Brno?
20 Kč for the 15-minute transfer ticket, 25 Kč for the 60-minute one, across the whole IDS JMK network (trams, buses, trolleybuses, local trains). If you tap contactless with Beep&Go there is nothing to calculate: rides are totalled at day's end and capped at 90 Kč. Brno spans two fare zones and the price rises beyond them, which matters for trips out into the region.
